Investigative Studios is an independent, non-profit production company formally affiliated with UC Berkeley. Lowell Bergman, a professor and renowned investigative reporter, established Studios with the help of faculty, alumni and other media professionals to produce journalism in the public interest while advancing journalism education.
Our investigations primarily result in documentary films and series, but we work across online, print and audio to extend our reach to the widest audience. Research and development for many of Studios’ projects is coordinated with the Investigative Reporting Program (IRP) at the Graduate School of Journalism. Studios works with IRP to provide students a journalistic “teaching hospital.”
The revenue streams generated by our productions help support the IRP and the journalism school, creating a new, self-sustaining model for in-depth journalism in the public interest.
Investigative Studios produces multimedia reporting that exposes oppression and corruption to rouse the most dynamic lever of change: an informed public. We are invested in the proposition that investigative reporting is necessary to a democratic society. Our work focuses on issues and events that are overlooked, misunderstood or hidden from view to the public’s detriment. We embrace the notion that for the audience to trust our work, we have to be transparent about our process and adhere to the highest standards of journalism: accuracy, fairness and ethical behavior. Investigative Studios is committed to dramatically expanding access and opportunities for journalists and filmmakers from racially and ethnically underrepresented backgrounds. We are dedicated to presenting factual reports fearlessly because we believe that trustworthy information is the most important currency in a democracy. Knowledge of society’s ills and how they might be countered is the first step to change.
