Founded in 2015 by Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter Lowell Bergman at UC Berkeley’s Graduate School of Journalism, Investigative Studios is now an independent non-profit 501(c)3, continuing a rich history of producing award-winning films and educating the next generation of investigative filmmakers.

Investigative Studios’ mission is: To rouse the most dynamic lever of change:
A WELL-INFORMED PUBLIC

STUDIOS produces, as well as supports, mentors, and educates the next generation of investigative filmmakers dedicated to making positive social impact. Our in-house and grantee projects focus on:

  • exposing socio-political issues.

  • seeking information beyond the headlines.

  • uncovering injustice, abuse, and wrongdoing.

  • elevating underrepresented voices.

Studios is not beholden to any ideological group or type of funder. Targeted to the general population, productions are aired on major neutral and respected platforms,

Our grant recipients are directors and producers from underrepresented communities. These grantees also benefit from the mentorship of experienced advisors and the opportunity to access our network of professionals across the private and public sectors..

All productions - our own and our grantees’ fulfill the core principles of non-partisan investigative reporting. They are well-researched and meticulously fact-checked and we exhaust every effort to give a fair airing of all sides of a story with historical context and factual presentation,

StudiosInvestigative Documentary Education Program (DEP) offers a series of workshops for early career as well as seasoned filmmakers on investigative reporting techniques, tools, standards and practices.
